#1 Toyota 4x4

When I was 28 Years old, I left Togo. I first went to Burkina Faso and to Niger. In Niger at that time, you could easily find someone who offers you to arrange a trip to one of the neighbouring countries. One of these “travel agents” asked me 450 euros to go to Libya. I made a deal with him.
I was with 24 other people in a Toyota 4x4. We drove together from Niger to Libya. On the way, a severe car accident happened. The car carried many canisters with gasoline in the back and when it crashed, the car was set on fire. Three people died in this accident. I got burned on my arm very badly. The Arab driver was stuck in the burning car and I rescued him with the help of another guy. The place was in the middle of the desert, it had around 50 degrees and if we were staying there for some hours, we would have been grilled by the sun. Luckily we were followed by another car that could pick us up and bring us to the next little town in Libya which is called Sabhā.

２８歳のとき、私はトゴを離れた。まずはじめに、ブルキナファソ、そしてニジェールへと向かった。その当時のニジェールだと、どこか隣の国へ行こうと思ったら、その旅を調整してくれる人は路上なんかですぐに見つかった。そんな「旅行代理店」が私が道を歩いているそばから声をかけ、「４５０ユーロ（５万２１００円ほど）でリビアに行けるよ。」と言って斡旋してきた。私はその申し出を受けることにした。
私は他の２４人の乗客たちと一緒に、ニジェールからリビアへと向かうトヨタの４ｘ４の中にいた。旅の途中、大きな事故に見舞われた。長距離を休み無く走るつもりだった車には、たくさんのガソリンがトランクに詰め込まれていた。車がなにかにぶつかった途端、一瞬にして火の海に覆われた。３人の乗客が火のなかで死んだ。私は腕にひどい火傷を負った。アラブ人の運転手は燃え盛る車の中に閉じ込められ、私ともうひとりの人とで彼をなんとか救出することができた。事故が起きたのは、なにもない砂漠の真ん中で、気温は５０度くらいにまでなっていたと思う。もし数時間でもその中に立ちっぱなしでいようものなら、太陽で身体の半分は焼け焦がれてしまうような場所に、私たちは放り出されてしまった。それでも幸運なことに、後ろから付いてきていた車が、事故から生き延びた私たちを拾ってくれ、リビアの小さな街、サブハまで連れて行ってくれた。
